"When, Why, and How Power Corrupts"
Event Information:
6:00 - 6:30 p.m. - Registration and refreshments
6:30 - 8:00 p.m. - Professor Galinsky presentation and Q & A
8:00 - 9:00 p.m. - Networking hour
Cost: FREE
Session Information:
The talk will tackle the question: What was Blagojevich thinking or When, why, and how does power corrupt? Taking a social-cognitive approach, Professor Galinsky and his collaborators find that power fundamentally changes how people see and approach the world. Essentially, power has two major effects: one negative and one positive. First, power leads individuals to anchor too heavily on their own egocentric desires and inhibits perspective-taking. The more power that leaders have, the harder it is for them to grasp what the world looks like to the people under them. Second, a number of the psychological properties of power – action, optimism, abstract thinking – can be seen as part and parcel of effective leadership. The talk will address ways to harness the good in power (the energizing force to make the seemingly impossible possible) while minimizing its psychological and social deficits. Professor Galinsky will also address the provocative question of whether sex differences are rooted in biological distinctions between men and women or differential levels of social and organizational power. Professor Information:
Professor Galinsky has published more than 50 peer-reviewed journal articles, chapters, and teaching cases in the fields of management and social psychology. His teaching, research, and consulting focus on leadership, decision-making, negotiations and dispute resolution, motivation, interpersonal influence, team and organizational culture development, and organizational values. Across his lines of research, Professor Galinsky explores how individuals make sense of and participate in their social and organizational worlds and the consequences of this participation for motivation, team performance, and conflict. Professor Galinsky's research has received national and international recognition and numerous media mentions. His work on auctions was selected as one of the Ideas of the Year in 2007 by the New York Times Magazine. He teaches courses on Leadership in Organizations, Values Based Leadership, Negotiations, Leading High Performing Teams, and Research Methodology to MBA, executive, and doctoral audiences. He has consulted with and conducted executive workshops for the FBI, BP, The Ministry of Finance of Thailand, Hearst Publishing Company, Land O' Lakes, Manpower, the Young President's Organization, Ronald McDonald House, Hilco Resources Merchant, Alliant Credit Union, Oil Dri, the city of Chapel Hill, NC, and the London Symphony Orchestra.
